Today, we celebrate the feast day of San Miguel. Saint Michael is an archangel, a spiritual warrior in the battle of good versus evil. He is the defender of truth, justice, and everything that is right and is considered a champion of justice, a healer of the sick, and the guardian of the Church.
As a defender of faith, San Miguel defends us against our enemies and defeats them for us, just as he defeated the Christian devil. He is a spiritual warrior who guards against evil and protects the faithful - songs sing of his overwhelming power to destroy his enemies.
Archangel Saint Michael is also the protector or children, rushing to their aid and protection whenever called.
In 21 Divisions and Sanse, Saint Michael is synchronized with the loa Belie Belcan, an ancient guardian spirit and the patron saint of justice who is invoked for protection.
In Yoruba based practices, such as Ifa and Santeria, San Miguel is synchronized with Ogun, the powerful warrior orisha of iron, war, and technology. While Ogun is often known to be tempered, unlike the polite loa Belie Belcan, he fiercely protects his followers and assists us in knowing and owning our personal power.
Regardless of the belief system, Saint Michael is regarded as the patron saint of justice who defends people against evil and enemies.
To invoke San Miguel’s protective powers, pray this simple novena:
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.
