Oke: Orisha of the Hill, Mountain & Heights

Oke: Orisha of the Hill, Mountain & Heights

Today, we celebrate the feast day of Oke, the Orisha of mountains, hills, and heights or elevations of the land. He represents the perfection of the primordial state of the man, the perfection that comes from Olodumare, born of Olodumare, and returned to him.

Oke is the Orisha that accompanies Obatala. Closely related to Mother Earth, he is the first mountain of the Earth,  later giving rise to the formation of the mainland.

Oke is a secondary Orisha, belonging to the Yoruba book of secrets. He represents the optimal state of man; the perfection that comes from Olodumare, and the mysteries of Olofin. Also related to fertility, the progress of planting, and good harvests, Oke takes care of all the Orishas and is the caretaker and protector of the Earth.

Oke has the strength to be the guardian of all of the saints and is a pillar of the wise Obatala and the creator of Olofi. He does not settle nor is he static, he is very broad in his knowledge and wisdom, and forms an important trilogy with Oggué and Orisha Oko, with whom they govern all the movements of the earth.

Oke grants us abundance produced by hard work that leads to success, brings balance, proportionality, and control, and is related to spiritual harmony.

Depending on the lineage, Oke is syncretized with San Roberto, Santa Marta, or Santiago Apóstol (Patron of Spain).
