Saint Lucy: Bringer & Protector of Light

Saint Lucy: Bringer & Protector of Light

Today, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Lucy (Santa Lucia), the bringer of light to the world.

St. Lucy, whose name can mean "light" or "lucid," is the patron saint of the blind. Due to her supernatural ability to help people “see,” Santa Lucia is sought out by rootworkers to shed light on a situation.

With her similarities to Santa Clara, some lineages of syncretic traditions synchronize Santa Lucia with deities others synchronize with Saint Claire.

One voodoo house I'm aware of represents the lwa Ayizan with St. Lucy, and in some of the West African Orisha practices, St. Lucy is seen as the Orixa Ewa (Yewa) who is associated with dusk and dawn, vapor and mist, vulnerability, ferocity, the space between, and sight.

The space between is like that of a snake shedding its skin - a space of transformation. When the snake sheds its skin, it becomes temporarily blind in the transition. It is in this space between that it is most vulnerable and most in its power to see.

When you find yourself in times of transition, call on this miraculous saint to bring light to your journey.
