Babalu Aye, San Lazaro Collares Elekes

Babalu Aye, also known as San Lázaro in syncretized Afro-Cuban traditions, is a revered Orisha (spiritual entity) associated with healing, health, and the well-being of the sick. Widely venerated in the Yoruba religion, Santería, and related spiritual practices, he embodies the compassion and resilience of those who suffer from illness, poverty, or hardship.

Babalu Aye is often depicted as an elderly, humble figure dressed in tattered robes, leaning on crutches or walking with the aid of a staff, symbolizing his role as a healer of ailments and a protector of the downtrodden. He is intimately connected to diseases such as smallpox, leprosy, and other afflictions, and is called upon to provide relief, purification, and restoration of health.

In his syncretic identity as San Lázaro in the Catholic tradition, he is represented as the biblical Lazarus, a symbol of resurrection and divine mercy. His feast day, December 17, is celebrated with great devotion, particularly in Cuba, where processions and offerings honor his miraculous intercessions.

Known for his powerful connection to both suffering and redemption, Babalu Aye inspires faith, gratitude, and compassion, reminding devotees of the transformative power of endurance and healing. Offerings to him often include grains, such as corn or millet, as well as cigars and rum, reflecting the deep bond between his devotees and his divine presence.
