Damballah is the loa who is credited with the creation of the world and all other gods. He is said to be the oldest and most powerful, and is commonly represented in the form of a serpent. Through synchronistic practices to protect Vodouists from French leaders who outlawed the practice of Vodou in Haiti, St. Patrick is identified with Damhallah because he is commonly depicted with snakes due to the lore that credits St. Patrick with driving all of the snakes out of Ireland.
