Marassas’ Third
By Ricardo Pustanio
In the mystic paradox of Vodou, the Marassa—divine twins—are said to be incomplete without the arrival of the third. “The one who comes as two” may truly come as three, and the single child born after twins is believed to hold even greater spiritual force. Marassas’ Third embodies this esoteric mystery: the unexpected completion, the hidden axis that unites and empowers.
This striking papier-mâché sculpture by Ricardo Pustanio radiates from a central skull crowned in cowrie shells, its visage marked with triple red Xs. Surrounding it, a halo of stylized bones forms a sunburst of power, encircled by a string of wooden beads and crowned with a weathered fleur-de-lis. Veves mark the base, rooting it in sacred ground, while offerings—red and white beads, a black rooster claw—speak to both petition and protection.
Whether seen as guardian, witness, or herald, Marassas’ Third tells the story of completion through paradox, reminding us that wholeness often comes from the unexpected.
