Pan, Paper Mache Skull by Ricardo Pustanio – One of the Original 3 Remaining from the First Series

Step into the primal magic of the wild with this rare and extraordinary papier-mâché Pan Skull, handcrafted by Ricardo Pustanio—renowned New Orleans artist, ritual visionary, and creator of sacred iconography known around the world.

This piece is not merely art—it is a relic of mystical legacy. One of only three remaining skulls from the original 100 created in 2021 at the request of Sallie Ann Glassman for a sacred altar window installation at the New Orleans Healing Center, this skull belongs to the very first series ever crafted by Pustanio. Each skull from this set was created as a spiritual gateway—infused with intention, history, and ancestral fire.

🐏 About the Spirit of the Piece: Pan

This particular skull embodies Pan, the ancient goat-horned god of the wild, the forest, fertility, ecstasy, music, and chaos. Pan is a liminal spirit—half beast, half divine—and walks the edge between instinct and enlightenment. He is a symbol of sacred madness, uncontainable desire, and freedom from repression.

To work with or honor Pan is to court creative fire, sexual sovereignty, feral wisdom, and the power of the untamed natural world. His presence invokes:

  • Liberation from fear and false control
  • Awakening of sacred sensuality and ecstatic states
  • Fierce creative impulse and raw inspiration
  • Protection of wild spaces—inner and outer
  • Connection to the Green Man and Earth spirits

This skull is a portal to Pan’s wild current, crafted to honor that spirit and to hold space in rituals, altars, or sacred spaces that require boundary-breaking energy and unshakable life force.

🎭 About the Artist

Ricardo Pustanio is internationally known for his haunting, soul-stirring skulls and ritual creations. From 1999 to 2020, he was the artistic force behind Krewe of Mid-City—designing and producing Mardi Gras floats with mythical themes. He is also the mind and hand behind the International Shrine of Marie Laveau, a spiritual landmark in New Orleans Vodou.

His skulls are now sought after by collectors, mystics, and curators alike—with invitations to be exhibited at the International Museum of Arts and Civilisations of Vodun in Benin.
