Guardian of the Gate – Ricardo Pustanio Skull Sculpture
This one-of-a-kind papier-mâché skull by renowned New Orleans artist Ricardo Pustanio is more than an art piece — it is a guardian. Rising from its base, crowned with the fleur-de-lis of the Crescent City, this skull carries the weight of legend and the mystery of New Orleans’ sacred crossroads.
✨ The Lore
It is said that beneath the streets and cemeteries of New Orleans lie the 7 Gates of Guinee — spiritual passageways between this world and the ancestral realm. Few dare approach them, for each gate is guarded by its own keeper, a spirit charged with testing those who would pass.
This skull represents one of those guardians. Its burning eyes are said to watch the living as they approach, measuring their courage and purity of intent. Around its neck hangs a simple wooden rosary — an offering left by those who passed through before, praying to be judged with mercy.
The fleur-de-lis rising from its crown marks its domain in New Orleans itself, where the living and the dead share the same streets. To approach this gatekeeper was to face not only your ancestors, but your own shadow.
In the old tales whispered on storm-tossed nights, this guardian was known as Le Gardien du Silence — the Keeper of Silence. It asked no questions, but its gaze pierced every soul. If you were unworthy, the gate would remain closed, and you would be left to wander endlessly in the between-world. But if you were found ready, the skull’s eyes would burn bright, and the path forward would open.
